Soy wax for candles: characteristics, properties and benefits

Soya wax is a popular material for candles. It is valued for its natural composition, which consists of vegetable oils. However, alongside its undeniable advantages, the material also has some drawbacks or properties that are worth being aware of in advance. We’ll explain in more detail what soya wax is, how it is produced, and explore where and why it is used.

What is soy wax and how is it produced?

This natural product, derived from soybean oil, serves as a good alternative to synthetic compounds such as paraffin. Soya is one of the best-known plants among oilseeds and legumes. Once ripe, the beans are harvested, washed, hulled, cleaned of impurities and ground into flakes. The raw material is then placed in an extractor, where it is treated with a solvent (usually hexane), and the oil is subsequently thoroughly purified to remove any chemical residues. Soy wax is produced from this oil as a base for candle making.

The production of this wax requires chemical extraction, but the end product is more environmentally friendly compared to paraffin-based alternatives. Biodegradable wax can be partially recycled or disposed of without harming the environment, which helps to reduce the consumption of new resources.

The natural material from which soy wax is made is environmentally friendly and harmless to the home environment. No hazardous substances are released during combustion. The substance mixes easily with various oils, fatty acids and natural emulsifiers, has no strong odour and effectively conveys the subtle aromas of essential oils. Melting point: approximately 50°C.

Characteristics of soy wax for candles

This candle-making product has become popular due to its many beneficial properties:

  • it blends well with other ingredients – fragrances, colourants and other additives;
  • it does not overpower the scent of essential oils, which helps to fragrance the room;
  • it has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, which helps it melt faster and burn more brightly;
  • it has a stable setting temperature and retains the texture and shape of the candle after cooling;
  • it leaves no residue. Does not stick to hands or surfaces;
  • features delicate shades – from pale yellow to creamy white. The natural colour is attractive in its own right, which is why soy wax is often produced without added colourants.

The natural composition of the product is reflected in the uneven setting of the mixture – loose patches, small holes, patterns and a bumpy surface may appear, indicating the crystallisation process of the components. Frosting, or the appearance of a coating resembling frost patterns, is a common phenomenon characteristic of natural ingredients. This pattern is particularly noticeable on coloured surfaces.

The benefits of soy wax for candles

The advantages of natural wax are driving interest in it, as:

  • it ensures a long-lasting, clean burn and even heat distribution;
  • it leaves no carbon footprint – a key consideration for those concerned about the environment;
  • it has been proven to contain no toxic components – it leaves no negative effects and does not cause allergic reactions. Such candles can be used in the home;
  • the scent is released gradually as the candle burns slowly. The dense texture retains aromatic oils well;
  • cleaning the surface of particles is straightforward, leaving no stains or traces of removal;
  • renewable resources (bean cultivation) reduce dependence on raw material sources.

The scents released by the candles improve well-being and mood. For example, the scent of mint invigorates and energises, whilst lavender induces relaxation, leading to a calm state and inner harmony.

Drawbacks

When working with natural materials, it is advisable to bear in mind the following important points:

  • Compared to other materials, soy wax is sensitive to temperature changes due to its lower melting point. In hot weather, the candles may soften. The material should therefore be protected from direct sunlight – to do this, it should be stored in a cool place.
  • Soy-based products are susceptible to moisture. Their ability to absorb moisture from the air causes a whitish film or spots to appear on the surface of the candles;
  • The risk of the candle deforming increases in draughts or high humidity;
  • The candle-making process takes longer – the soy wax mixture sets more slowly than that made from other raw materials.

The addition of paraffin and other synthetic components reduces the environmental friendliness of soy wax.

The use of soy wax in various sectors

Its natural origin and beneficial properties have led to its widespread use in candle-making and the cosmetics industry. How can soy wax be used in cosmetics?

Main applications:

  • moisturising, thickening and stabilising the formulations of creams, balms and lotions;
  • moisture retention and enhanced shine in hair care products.

Its natural composition makes the skin smoother and more supple. It acts as a good emulsifier, helping to distribute active ingredients evenly. The product’s hypoallergenic nature is an important property for natural and organic cosmetics.

Other areas of application:

  • food industry – for coating fruit and vegetables to extend their shelf life;
  • medicine and dentistry – for creating dental models, dentures and hypoallergenic preparations;
  • industrial manufacturing – for producing lubricants, polishing agents and sealants;
  • construction – for protecting wooden surfaces from moisture and rot.

There is a growing trend towards developing biodegradable coatings, films and packaging, for which soy wax is used as a renewable, recyclable resource.

When selecting this material, it is important to consider the origin of the raw material, the absence of chemical additives, and the degree of purification from impurities. It is worth considering the colour and texture of the product when adding colourants and fragrances.

Soy wax is an excellent base for candles thanks to its natural composition, clean burn and strong fragrance. Take its characteristics into account to achieve the best results in your work.
